Education for Life - Year 8


In Education for Life, students will be taught by their Learning Mentors (Form Tutors) for one lesson each week. During these lessons, students will cover topics based on the EFL themes as well as use their Learning and Skills Development Journals to reflect on their progress and set appropriate targets for improvement with the guidance of their Learning Mentors. Assessment tasks for each topic allow students to reflect on their progress throughout the year.

Emotional Health and Body Image 
Students will evaluate how body image is presented within the modern media.  
Students will write Agony Aunt response letters, giving advice on healthy body image.  
Relationships and Sex Education 
Students will discuss laws surrounding consent, sexual harassment, sexting and equality for LGBT.  
Students will complete a quiz on their knowledge and understanding of areas covered in RSE.  
Revision Skills  
Students will implement a range of revision methods to use within their ST1 exams.  
Students will create a mock revision timetable and be assessed on how successful they are at applying 3 different revision strategies.  
War Horse
 
Students will evaluate the historical and cultural impact of the First World War through the use of the film study unit.  
Students will write a film review that incorporates their understanding of the film's key themes.  
Child Labour

(Citizenship) 
Students will analyse the issue of child labour on a global scale and investigate the rights of the child.

Citizenship Aim: understand the precious liberties enjoyed by the citizens of the United Kingdom.  
Students will explore child labour within the football industry.  
Anti-Social Behaviour

(Citizenship)  
Students will study anti-social behaviour and the consequences of engaging in this behaviour.

Citizenship Aim: understand the nature of rules and laws and the justice system, including the role of the police and the operation of courts and tribunals.  
Students will work in groups to present an aspect of anti-social behaviour.  
Careers Education 
Students will be introduced to careers information. Includes a hour session with Careers Advisor.

Britain as a Diverse Society
 
Students will explore diversity and culture within Britain.
 
Students to be quizzed on their knowledge of Britain as a diverse society.
Citizenship Aim: understand the precious liberties enjoyed by the citizens of the United Kingdom.  
Finance 
Students to be equipped with the skills to manage their money on a day-to-day basis, and plan for future financial needs. 
Students to plan their finance while earning an income from a particular job.  
EFL Event: 
Students will take part in a charity event for LEPRA, the UK's leading charity for leprosy.
