Design & Technology - Year 9

In Year 9 students continue to have one double lesson of Design and Technology a fortnight and are taught in mixed ability groups. They will continue to use their KS3 Design Book provided for them in Year 7. They will be required to bring basic stationary equipment, and any additional materials they feel will enhance their learning. The focus on the acquisition of skills in all material areas Year 9 forms the key to a good start in Year 10 GCSE studies. Students will be examined in the Spring term on their materials knowledge and design skills.

In the Summer term all students will sit a formal examination to test their designing skills and practical processes.

CAD/CAM 
Students will follow a course gaining as many skills as possible including many that they have not yet experienced. These will include computer aided design and computer aided manufacture through laser cutting and vinyl cutting. Factory style manufacturing techniques such as routing and laminating. The emphasis will be on individual development of a product for a specific task.  
At regular intervals there will be specific items that will be peer assessed. Teacher assessment will take place throughout and on completion of the product.
Textiles  
Students will be following a course based on a given context where they will conduct a primary investigation for their prototype. They will create their own design brief which they will use to help them design and manufacture a prototype that incorporates a range of decorative and construction skills. Students will use prior knowledge and new skills to construct their prototype. 
At regular intervals there will be specific items that will be peer assessed. Teacher assessment will take place throughout and on completion of the product.  
Food 
Students follow a course gaining as many skills as possible for their GCSE, they will study traditional British and international cuisines. They will create dishes such as: fresh pasta, Risotto, jambalaya and quiche. Students will also take part in the Rotary Club Young Chefs Competition, which is a national competition judged by chefs from local hotels.
