The Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE course has been designed for students who are interested in Food making, tasting, developing and investigating it. Students will develop a greater understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food, they will master culinary skills and appreciate the science behind food and cooking. The course will build on the many skills learnt during Key Stage 3. Equipment required will be basic stationary items, students will be required to provide the majority of the ingredients.*

Task 1: Students will carry out an investigation into the scientific principles that underpin the preparation and cooking of food. An opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and practically apply their understanding of the science behind cooking by investigating ingredients and explaining how they work and why.

Task 2: Students will plan, prepare, cook and present a 3 course menu. An opportunity to cook up a storm and showcase your creativity and cooking skills. For example; make a street food menu, create delicious tapas dishes or cook up a menu for a student on a budget.

The Non-Exam task is internally marked and moderated by the examination board.

Examination Preparation  
Students will build on the theory lessons in Year 10 to further develop their knowledge and understanding of the wider subject. Students will be asked to show their knowledge of food safety, eating for health, nutritional analysis, food allergies and intolerance, food manufacturing and functional properties of food.
